Major States
The five major modem states are illustrated in the figure below. The arrows
on the figure show the directions in which state changes may occur. The
driving events are not shown on the diagram; but they are explained. It
is possible to define more states than those depicted in the figure. For
example, there are several special self-test functions that are not regarded
as major states in this Reference.
