The following information should be noted when using the &V8 command:

1. The line and character spacings illustrated above are used for the &V8 response.

2. The valid values for <protocol>are:

3. The valid values for <type>are:

4. The ;, ;, and <;direction>;are the values of S146, S147, and S148, respectively.

5 The values for <num>shall be the actual number in decimal.

6. A new line speed line shall be created each time the line speed changes. The line speed may change because the other end requests it or because of local signal quality. The initial line speed and up to nine most recent speed changes shall be displayed.

7. The line speeds, <speed>, shall be the actual line speed in bits/s. If the transmit and receive line speeds are different, then <speed>shall be displayed as <send_speed>/<receive_speed>.

8. The <time>values shall be the number of seconds since completion of handshaking.

9. The <why>values shall indicate the reason for the line speed. Valid values of <why>are:
<why> Meaning

Error Rate The error rate changed.

Initial At start of connection.

Local Retrain Local command initiated.

Local Re-negotiated Local command initiated.

Remote Retrain Remote end retrained.

Remote Re-negotiated Remote end requested change.

Signal Quality Signal quality changed.

10. The <num>for frames sent or received shall be the number of V.42 or other protocol frames.

11. The <num>of frames repeated shall be the number of frames sent or received more than once, due to frame reject or selective reject.

12. The <num>of characters is the number that passed between the DCE and the DTE.

13. If the desired information is not available for a field, the field shall be replaced by spaces or left blank.
14. The DCE buffer in which the &V8 information is accumulated shall be purged at the completion of handshaking. The information shall be retained between calls.

15. The valid values for <reason>are:
