Negotiation Progress Messages
Hayes products report special result codes during error-control negotiation.
Use the W command (not the W dial modifier) to display these messages. The
factory setting disables these messages (W0) to avoid conflict with software
programs that do not support this additional level of call progress monitoring.
Negotiation progress messages are reported in the following order:
CARRIER
PROTOCOL
AUTOSTREAM
COMPRESSION
CONNECT
If AutoStream is not used, no message is reported.

66 COMPRESSION: Data compression using MNP Class 5 is negotiated for the connection.
CLASS 5
67 COMPRESSION: Data compression using ITU-T V.42bis is negotiated for the connection.
V.42BIS
68 COMPRESSION: Data compression using Hayes Adaptive Data Compression is negotiated for
ADC the connection.
69 COMPRESSION: Data compression was not negotiated for the connection.
NONE
70 PROTOCOL: No protocol was negotiated for the connection. A standard asynchronous
NONE connection was made.
71 PROTOCOL: An error-control connection was negotiated with LAPB protocol.
ERROR- This protocol is the one used by the first V-series products.
CONTROL/ LAPB
72 PROTOCOL: A half-duplex error-control connection was negotiated with LAPB protocol.
ERROR-CONTROL This protocol is used by the first Vseries products communicating at 9600
/ LAPB/HDX bits/s.
73 PROTOCOL: An error-control connection is negotiated using the Hayes Asynchronous
ERROR- Framing Technique (AFT). AFT connects modems such as Smartmodem 1200 that
CONTROL/LAPB/ do not communicate synchronously across the telephone line. AFT enables an
AFT error-control protocol.
74 PROTOCOL: An error-control connection using the X.25 protocol is established with a
X.25/LAPB carrier speed of 1200, 2400, 4800, or 9600 bits/s.
75 PROTOCOL: A half-duplex error-control connection using the X.25 protocol is
X.25/LAPB/HDX established with a carrier speed of 4800 or 9600 bits/s.
76 76 p; PROTOCOL: An asynchronous error-control connection using the X.25 protocol is
X.25/LAPB/AFT established with a carrier speed of 1200 bits/s. The Hayes AFT is used.
77 PROTOCOL: An error-control connection using the V.42 LAPM protocol is established
LAP-M with a carrier speed of 1200, 2400, 4800, or 9600 bits/s.
78 PROTOCOL: A half-duplex error-control connection using the V.42 LAPM protocol is
LAP-M/HDX established with a carrier speed of 4800 or 9600 bits/s.
79 PROTOCOL: An asynchronous error-control connection using the V.42 LAPM protocol is
LAP-M/AFT established with a carrier speed of 1200 bits/s. The Hayes AFT is used.
80 PROTOCOL: An error-control connection using the V.42 LAPM alternative protocol is
ALT established with a carrier speed of 1200, 2400, 4800, or 9600 bits/s. This
protocol is MNP Classes 2, 3, and 4 compatible.

91 AUTOSTREAM: Hayes AutoStream Level 1 is negotiated for the connection. This technique
LEVEL 1 allows multiplexing of multiple virtual channels.
92 AUTOSTREAM: Hayes AutoStream Level 2 is negotiated for the connection. This technique
LEVEL 2 provides for multiplexing of multiple virtual channels, with transparent
control of one PAD (non-simultaneous).
93 AUTOSTREAM: Hayes AutoStream Level 3 is negotiated for the connection. This technique
LEVEL 3 allows multiplexing of multiple virtual channels, with transparent control
of all PADs (simultaneous).
94 AUTOSTREAM: Hayes AutoStream Level 4 combines AutoStream types B and B1.
LEVEL 4
95 AUTOSTREAM: Hayes AutoStream Level 4 combines AutoStream types A, B, and B1.
